At 37 years old, Alex Pretti worked as a nurse in the intensive care unit for the US Department of Veteran Affairs keeping people alive and caring for others. On January 24, 2026 he was filming an arrest by Border Patrol agents amid a surge of federal immigration operations (Operation Metro Surge) in Minneapolis, MN. At one point he found himself coming to the aid of another observer who was being pushed down by an agent. Bystander video from different angles shows he was subsequently pepper sprayed and wrestled to the ground by several agents. It then captured the moment when one of the agents removes a gun away from Pretti just a second before he was shot several times. Pretti died at the scene.

The Trump administration declared the shooting justified with the secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, making the statement, “this looks like a situation where an individual arrived at the scene to inflict maximum damage on individuals and kill law enforcement”. Pretti was legally armed with a firearm but he never brandished it in any way during the incident.

Government records reviewed by the non-profit newsroom, ProPublica, revealed the identity of the agents as Border Patrol agent Jesus Ochoa and Customs and Border Protection officer Raymundo Gutierrez. The Trump administration has been refusing to cooperate with state law enforcement in the investigation of the case which is leading to state prosecutors to file a federal lawsuit against the department of Homeland Security.
