Another man has been killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, this time in Houston, Texas. In the early morning hours of July 7, 2026, 52 year old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national and father of three, was driving his van to work along with three coworkers when two unmarked ICE vehicles began pursuing them. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses shows the ICE vehicles tailing Salgado Araujo’s van until he made a U-turn and pulled over. As the van came to a stop just beyond the camera’s view, several agents were seen rushing toward it. Shortly after the shooting, cellphone video captured by a witness shows agents gathered over Salgado Araujo as he lay injured on the ground. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died from his wounds.

The Department of Homeland Security has claimed that Salgado Araujo was shot in self-defense after allegedly trying to run over the agents. However, none of the agents involved were wearing body cameras, leaving their account unsubstantiated. DHS also confirmed that Salgado Araujo was not the intended target of the operation.

Salgado Araujo was an undocumented immigrant who had lived in the U.S. for nearly 35 years. He had no criminal record and was actively working to obtain his work permit. In a news conference following the shooting, his son, Ronaldo Salgado Araujo, spoke with grief and outrage: “He did not deserve to be reduced to a headline - ‘A Mexican man shot and killed by ICE.’ He deserved to live a quiet life as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo: a husband, a father, and a job creator for dozens of men who also dreamed of the American dream.” Ronaldo added that he first learned of his father’s death through a news report on social media.

The three coworkers inside the van at the time of the shooting have stated that the agents were not directly in the path of the vehicle when they opened fire. Their testimony echoes a troubling pattern: in similar cases, video evidence has repeatedly contradicted federal law enforcement accounts, including in the deaths of Renee Nicole Good and Ruben Ray Martinez, among others. The strategy of blaming the victim and claiming self-defense crumbles when the evidence tells a different story. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was killed as a result of racial profiling. We cannot trust the Department of Homeland Security to investigate itself. It’s time to demand a full, independent investigation.
